THE CHALLENGE

In 2013, ACF decided to take on the Governor General’s challenge to help build a “smart and caring nation” as Canada approached it’s 150th birthday by making a commitment to support programs that help children at risk from then until 2017.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Since the inception of this challenge, ACF has  granted over $300,000 to local Abbotsford charities for their programs that support children at risk.  Some of the programs that have received our support are:  sending 50 children to the Abbotsford Food Bank’s soccer camp, funding the Youth Commission’s nutrition program, making it possible for children to take music lessons at Bakerview Music Academy, supporting the Salvation Army’s Camp Sunrise; and funding counselling for at risk children and their families in crisis through the Abbotsford Restorative Justice & Advocacy Association.  The campaign  has also provided funding for 20 Starfish Backpacks over a period of four years.  The Starfish BackPack Program is a joint initiative of the Abbotsford Food Bank and  the Rotary Club of Abbotsford that provides food for children in need every Friday for every weekend during the school year.  The Rotary Club of Abbotsford has raised much of the money for this project through support from local businesses and other organizations and given countless hours of time co-ordinating volunteers and promoting the program. The Smart and Caring Campaign has also provided funding for the Power Hours After School Program at Harry Sayers Elementary, a program supported of the City of Abbotsford and the Royal Bank of Canada.

WE NEED YOUR HELP

Our grants are funded from the income of our Smart and Caring Community Fund.  For every dollar donated to support this fund, ACF grants a dollar to a local program for children at risk up to a maximum of $300,000 by 2017.  For info on the programs funded in 2017 see our  2017 Summary .  If you are a local business that would like to support our community campaign we have lots of ideas for how you can participate, see Infosheet for Businesses

BECOME A MONTHLY DONOR

ACF has funded 20 Starfish Backpacks in 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017. We have granted over $50,000 to this program since 2014.  Every Friday approximately 263 children and their families receive food for the weekend during the school year.  But another 137 children are still waiting for their backpacks. Help fund more in the future by making a monthly gift of $45 for 12 months.  Click on the button below to become a monthly donor today.
