$90,000 in Grants Provided to Local Charities Through Smart and Caring Community Grants Program
We’re thrilled to announce a total of $90,000 was presented to thirteen local charities at a special presentation event in our boardroom on June 5, 2020. Leaders of the various charities attended in separate time slots to comply with COVID-19 safety protocols. Each charity gave a quick a summary on how the grant funding will increase care and support across a broad spectrum of organizations supporting children and families at risk in our community.
“We are pleased to have distributed $90,000 in grants to our community partners,” said Andrea Senft, our Board Chair. “ACF is honoured to invest in our community. Without this funding many of these crucial programs would have to be cut or cancelled,” added Senft.
We recently renovated and expanded our boardroom, partially funded by a generous donation by Vivian Trethewey, who along with her late husband, Alan were the founding donors to our foundation forty years ago. Mrs. Trethewey continues to contribute to our ongoing community impact. “The Abbotsford Community Foundation is one of the best ways to give; it’s strong and it’s living, it’s alive and active!” says Vivian Trethewey.
Our Community Grants Committee is made up of of local individuals with a passion for serving the Abbotsford community. Chair of the committee, Denise Thandi has been involved on the committee for a few years. Through her work in this sector, she has seen the needs in our community be addressed by the many programs that our local charities partners run to help children and families at risk.
Our Executive Director, Wendy Neufeld, added that many organizations presented worthy applications. “Abbotsford has a population in need of additional supports and care. This does not go unnoticed.” The Smart and Caring Community Fund has provided many local charities with more than $600,000 in grants since 2014. The annual Smart and Caring Golf Classic held each year on the 3rd Thursday of September raises funds that are permanently added to the capital of this community fund. The 2020 event will be on September 17th and is sold out for which we are very grateful as the charities need support now more than ever.
