Celebrating Christmas: A Season of Joy, Giving, and Kindness

23 December 2024News & Announcements

As a holiday observed around the world, Christmas is a time to celebrate joy, giving, and kindness as a community. Christmas brings hope and light to those who celebrate. Over the centuries, the holiday has evolved into a global celebration, bringing people together to reflect on the joys of the season and the values of compassion and kindness.

Celebrated on December 25th, Christmas is a Christian holiday that recognizes the birth of Jesus Christ, who is believed to be the Son of God and the Saviour in Christian faith. The origins of Christmas are rooted in the biblical story of Jesus’ birth. According to the Bible, Jesus was born in Bethlehem to the Virgin Mary, fulfilling ancient prophecies of a Messiah who would bring hope and salvation to the world. The story describes Mary and Joseph traveling to Bethlehem, where Jesus was born in a humble stable. Angels announced the joyous news to shepherds in the fields, proclaiming “good tidings of great joy,” while wise men, guided by a bright star, brought gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh to honour the newborn king. Over time, Christmas has grown into a celebration of love, peace, and generosity, while still honouring its sacred origins as a day to reflect on faith, hope, and the message of Christ’s birth.

The joy of the season extends well beyond the single day. The weeks leading up to Christmas, known as Advent, are filled with preparation and anticipation. Families decorate their homes with lights, wreaths, and Christmas trees, creating an atmosphere of warmth and festivity. Communities come alive with carol singing, holiday markets, and charitable events that invite everyone to share in the spirit of giving.

No Christmas celebration is complete without some good food, which brings loved ones together around the table to share in the feasting of the season. Traditional dishes vary from family to family, showcasing the diverse ways this holiday is celebrated. Some popular Christmas foods include:

Roast Turkey: A centerpiece of many Christmas feasts, served with stuffing, cranberry sauce, and gravy.

Mashed Potatoes and Vegetables: Comforting sides that complement the main dishes.

Christmas Pudding: A rich, spiced dessert often served with custard or brandy sauce.

Cookies and Treats: Gingerbread cookies, shortbread, and other festive baked goods are a must-have during the holiday season.

From brightly lit neighbourhoods to many donating time or money in the spirit of giving, Abbotsford truly captures the magic of Christmas.
