Celebrating Kwanzaa: Unity, Culture, and the Power of Giving
17 December 2025News & Announcements
Kwanzaa is a week-long celebration that honours African heritage, community, and culture. Observed from December 26th to January 1st, Kwanzaa was created in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga as a way to bring African-American families together and celebrate shared values, traditions, and history. The holiday emphasizes reflection, education, and the reinforcement of bonds within families and communities.
While Kwanzaa is often associated with candle lighting, cultural rituals, and feasts, at its heart the holiday also highlights generosity, social responsibility, and caring for others. It is a time to reflect on how our actions can uplift our community and strengthen the ties that bind us.
THE MEANING OF KWANZAA
Kwanzaa centres on seven core principles, known as the Nguzo Saba: Unity, Self-Determination, Collective Work and Responsibility, Cooperative Economics, Purpose, Creativity, and Faith. These principles guide participants in living intentionally, building stronger communities, and nurturing cultural pride. The celebration encourages individuals and families to look inward and outward, fostering personal growth while actively contributing to the well-being of others. It is a reminder that cultural heritage, values, and communal support are interconnected.
THE ROLE OF GIVING
Generosity and community support are central to Kwanzaa. Giving during the holiday can take many forms: sharing resources with those in need, supporting local initiatives, volunteering time, or mentoring and uplifting others in the community. The act of giving aligns with the principle of Collective Work and Responsibility, reinforcing the idea that community strength grows when we care for one another.
Gifts during Kwanzaa, known as Zawadi, are traditionally given to encourage growth, education, and cultural awareness. Unlike commercialized gift-giving, Zawadi are often handmade or educational, focusing on meaningful contributions that enrich lives and strengthen family and community bonds.

A CELEBRATION OF COMMUNITY AND CULTURE
Kwanzaa is a time for families and communities to come together in celebration, reflection, and education. Ceremonies, storytelling, music, and shared meals foster connection, joy, and cultural pride. The holiday serves as a reminder that generosity, kindness, and social responsibility are integral to building a vibrant and resilient community.
At Abbotsford Community Foundation, we believe in the power of giving to create lasting, positive change. Kwanzaa highlights how acts of generosity, big or small, can strengthen our communities, honour our shared values, and inspire hope for the future.
Wishing all who celebrate a joyful and meaningful Kwanzaa!
