Celebrating Lent: A Time for Reflection and Generosity
3 March 2025News & Announcements
As the season of Lent begins with Ash Wednesday, Christians around the world enter a time of reflection, renewal, and spiritual growth. Lasting 40 days from March 5th to April 17th this year, Lent is a sacred period leading up to Easter, where many believers focus on prayer, fasting, and most importantly, giving—a core value that strengthens communities and brings hope to those in need. In our own local community, Lent serves as a powerful reminder to support one another and uplift those facing hardship.
THE MEANING BEHIND ASH WEDNESDAY & LENT
Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, a solemn day of repentance and reflection. The ashes placed on the foreheads of believers symbolize human mortality and a commitment to spiritual renewal. This tradition serves as a reminder of the words spoken during the ash application: “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” It is a call to humility and a renewed focus on living with purpose and compassion.
Lent is modeled after the 40 days Jesus spent fasting in the wilderness, a time of testing and spiritual strengthening. The three pillars of Lent—prayer, fasting, and almsgiving—guide believers in their spiritual journey. Prayer deepens faith, fasting fosters discipline, and almsgiving encourages acts of charity and kindness. When these elements come together, they create a powerful opportunity for personal and communal transformation.
ALMSGIVING: A KEY TRADITION OF LENT
One of the central themes of Lent is almsgiving, or charitable giving. This practice is rooted in the idea of selflessness—sharing one’s blessings with those in need. Lent encourages individuals to extend generosity beyond themselves and make a tangible difference, especially within their local communities.
But Lent isn’t just about personal sacrifice; it’s about giving in ways that strengthen our local community. When we focus our generosity close to home, we create lasting impacts—helping individuals facing hardship, supporting essential community programs, and, fostering a spirit of togetherness. By embracing the call to give, we transform faith into action and become a source of hope for those around us.
Ways to give locally during Lent include:
- Donating to local charities that provide food, shelter, and support to families and individuals in need. Organizations such as Cyrus Centre, Archway Food Bank, and Raven’s Moon Resource Society rely on community generosity to continue their essential work. Donations of non-perishable food, clothing, and financial contributions can make a significant impact.
- Volunteering your time at a community organization, whether serving meals at a soup kitchen, mentoring youth, or assisting with local initiatives that uplift vulnerable populations. Consider giving your time to Life Recovery Association, Inasmuch Community Society or Abbotsford Community Services, which all offer programs to support people in need.
- Practicing daily acts of kindness, such as checking in on an elderly neighbour, helping a parent with a stroller board the bus, or simply spreading kindness in ways that create a ripple effect of generosity.

As many community members embark on this Lenten journey, we encourage all to reflect on how to serve and support our local community. Whether through donations, volunteer work, or small daily acts of kindness, each contribution helps create a more caring community. May this season of Lent be filled with moments of generosity, kindness, and a renewed commitment to making a difference in the lives of those around us.
