Celebrating Ramadan: Events, Traditions, and Community Connection
12 February 2026News & Announcements
Ramadan is the holy month in Islam and one of the Five Pillars of the faith. Muslims observe Ramadan through fasting from dawn to sunset, prayer, reading the Qur’an, and acts of charity. The fast commemorates the month in which the Qur’an was first revealed and is a time for spiritual growth, self-discipline, and strengthening relationships with family and community.
In 2026, Ramadan is expected to begin around the evening of February 17 and end around March 20, depending on moon sighting. It’s followed by Eid al-Fitr, a joyful festival of prayers, shared meals, and generosity.
LOCAL RAMADAN EVENTS AND GATHERINGS
Across Abbotsford and the Lower Mainland, many mosques and community groups host events that welcome both Muslim and non-Muslim neighbours to learn, connect, and celebrate together. Here are a few local events to check out:
- Grand Iftar in Abbotsford (March 1, 2026) – Hosted by Islamic Relief Canada, this community dinner brings people together to break the fast and reflect on faith, generosity, and compassion. The event will be held at Gian’s Indian Cuisine and includes a guest speaker and a charitable component supporting orphan care programs. Click here to learn more.
- Ramadan Fest BC (Surrey, March 5–8, 2026) is a large cultural festival featuring halal food vendors, shopping, prayer spaces, and family-friendly activities, welcoming tens of thousands of visitors from across the region. Click here to learn more.
THE SPIRIT OF GIVING DURING RAMADAN
Giving is at the heart of Ramadan. Muslims are encouraged to give Zakat (obligatory charity) and Sadaqah (voluntary charity), supporting those in need and strengthening their communities. This spirit of generosity reminds us that caring for one another is a shared responsibility, no matter our background or beliefs.
At ACF, we believe community well-being grows when we learn from one another, celebrate our differences, and support acts of kindness and generosity that bring people together. Ramadan is a beautiful example of how faith, compassion, and community can intersect to create a more caring and connected city.
