Celebrating Rosh Hashanah: A Time of Reflection, Renewal, and Giving

19 September 2025News & Announcements

Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, is a deeply meaningful holiday that marks the beginning of the High Holy Days in the Jewish calendar. It’s both a celebration and a time of profound reflection, calling individuals to look back on the past year, seek forgiveness, and commit to personal growth in the year ahead. Beyond prayer and tradition, Rosh Hashanah emphasizes community, renewal, and the importance of giving. This year, Rosh Hashanah begins at sundown on Sept 22, and concludes at nightfall on Sept 24.

THE MEANING OF ROSH HASHANAH

Rosh Hashanah means “Head of the Year.” It’s a time to reflect on one’s actions, mend relationships, and begin the year with a spirit of renewal and hope. The holiday is observed with prayer, the sounding of the shofar (a ram’s horn), and traditional foods such as apples dipped in honey, symbolizing the wish for a sweet new year.

The themes of Rosh Hashanah extend beyond the individual. It’s a season that reminds people of their responsibility to others and to the world around them. Reflection and repentance are coupled with acts of kindness and generosity, laying the foundation for a meaningful year ahead.

CELEBRATING THROUGH GIVING

An important part of Rosh Hashanah is the practice of tzedakah – the giving of charity. In Jewish tradition, tzedakah isn’t simply an act of generosity but a moral responsibility to care for those in need. During Rosh Hashanah, this responsibility is embraced with particular intention, as individuals and communities share their blessings to ensure that others may also enter the new year with joy and sustenance. Though tzedakah is practiced throughout the year, it carries special weight during the High Holy Days, when reflection and renewal inspire a deeper commitment to justice, compassion, and building a more caring world.

This spirit of giving often takes many forms: donating to charitable causes, preparing meals for those who are hungry, supporting local organizations, and extending kindness to neighbors and strangers alike. These acts of generosity reflect the values of justice, compassion, and community responsibility that lie at the heart of the holiday.

A CELEBRATION OF COMMUNITY AND HOPE

Rosh Hashanah is a time of togetherness. Families gather to share festive meals, where symbolic foods, such as round challah representing the cycle of life, and pomegranates symbolizing abundance, are enjoyed in a spirit of gratitude. Communities come together in prayer, song, and reflection, strengthening the bonds that carry them forward into the new year.

As we recognize Rosh Hashanah, we’re reminded that true renewal is not only found in personal reflection but also in our commitment to others. By giving generously and caring for those in need, we honor the essence of the holiday and help create a more compassionate and inclusive world.

Wishing all who celebrate a sweet, joyful, and meaningful Rosh Hashanah. May this new year inspire renewal, kindness, and the blessings of giving.
