We were thrilled to provide the Abby Community School Society with a $10,000 Smart and Caring Community Grant this year for their Summer Camp for Education & Recreation (SCAMPER) program. This program is a free 5-week summer camp hosted that helps 30 local students every year who are struggling with literacy. The philosophy of the program is to combine literacy education and recreation to ensure that children have an enjoyable experience and associate literacy with a positive experience. In this program, students receive direct support from teachers with a ratio of 1 teach for every 6 students.

We were even more thrilled to hear positive feedback from two parents who’s children participated in the SCAMPER program. Check out what they had to say below.

“On behalf of my wife and I, I would like to take a moment to thank you and your team for the amazing summer camp experience that was provided for our son. He really enjoyed his time at Scampers some of his favorite things were making new friends and connections with the other campers and the instructors.  We appreciated the positive experience created and always felt welcomed upon arrival.  All through the camp the team kept the energy high and remained enthusiastic. We found that the camp embraced our child and assisted in maintaining a schedule which is important to our child and his success at camp. The staff created a safe and positive learning space for him to continue to develop those social and emotional regulation skills that needed some extra support and growth. The teams knowledge, skill, and empathy was amazing and I would recommend this program to any parent that needs that little extra time to ensure their child is ready for the next year.  Also, his reading level and comprehension has grown drastically in this short time which is just amazing to see. Again, thank you to your team for everything.”

“I am writing to say how great my son’s Scamper program has been with the Abbotsford Community School. It is such a wonderful experience that my son can combine literacy practice with fun day camp activities for 5 weeks. And to make it also seem ‘too good to be true’ is the fact that it has been funded for us. It’s a great way to share the opportunity with families from all economic brackets. I also have the added teacher’s perspective in this as well; For many years I have been referring my Learning Assistance students to Scampers and they have all come back saying great things. The staff of the camp have been friendly, professional and skilled working with kids. I can’t say enough great things about this camp. Thank you so much for the opportunity.”
